No Health Without Mental Health at Aston University!

Doctor Brock Chisholm famously stated that “without mental health there can be no true physical health” but what is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional and social wellbeing and affects how we feel and act towards everyday situations. Without good mental health, everyone, especially university students can sometimes feel overwhelmed with everyday life and signs can be:

  • Feeling numb or like nothing matters

  • Having unexplained aches and pains

  • Feeling helpless or hopeless

  • Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than usual

  • Feeling unusually confused, forgetful, on edge, angry, upset, worried, or scared

  • Yelling or fighting with family and friends

  • Experiencing severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships

However, you are not alone. Studies show that nearly half (43.4%) of adults think that they have had a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life.

If you are currently studying at Aston University, there are a number of offerings available to you to help improve your mental health situation. Here are five different facilities at Aston University that can help promote your wellbeing and mental health:

  1. Counselling and Mental Wellbeing services that connects students to qualified counsellors/psychotherapy practitioners and those in training to support you. The counselling/psychotherapy sessions offer a safe, confidential space to explore what’s happening in your life. You will be respected and not judged.

  2. The Chaplaincy Team at the Martin-Luther King Multi-Faith Centre. The Centre caters for those of all faiths or of none, and the Chaplaincy team is experienced at listening and offers guidance.

  3. The Sir Doug Ellis Woodcock Sports Centre and Recreation Centre is home to a fully functional gym, multiple studios, and courts alongside Birmingham’s oldest, but most stunning operational swimming pool. Physical activity has the huge potential to enhance our wellbeing and mental health.

  4. Aston provides a variety of mentoring schemes to enable students to talk to someone for academic and life wellbeing support. This gives students the opportunity to engage in networking whilst expanding their confidence by developing multiple skills.

  5. Last but not least, Aston has an amazing Learning Development Centre that is there to help you with all aspects of your study, wellbeing and academic skills. They have many services that range from academic support, maths support to mentoring programmes.
